Lingam massage: what it is, and what it is not

Lingam is a Sanskrit word, and lingam massage is the tantric tradition's treatment for men. It also has the least accurate reputation of anything on a salon menu, so it is worth being precise about it.

The technique is about delay, not pursuit

The organising idea of lingam massage is the opposite of the obvious one. The technique is built around slowing down, pausing deliberately, and redistributing sensation through the rest of the body rather than concentrating it. Release may or may not be part of the session; either way, it is not the structure the hour is built on.

Men who have only experienced massage as something efficient often find the first twenty minutes genuinely difficult. That difficulty is the treatment working, not a sign that something is wrong.

How a session actually runs

• A shower, then a conversation about what you want and where your limits are.
• A long full-body opening — back, legs, shoulders — with breathing work throughout.
• Focused technique, introduced gradually, with deliberate pauses built in.
• A slow close. Getting up immediately afterwards defeats most of the point.

Who it suits

Men carrying a lot of stress, men who find it hard to switch off, and men who have had erotic massages before and found them shorter on substance than they hoped. It is also, quietly, one of the better treatments for anyone dealing with performance anxiety, precisely because nothing is expected of you.

How long to book

Sixty minutes minimum, and ninety if you can. At thirty minutes the technique has no room to do what it does, and you will have paid for a shorter version of a different massage.

A note on boundaries

A good therapist will ask what you want before starting and check as she goes. You can stop or redirect the session at any point without explaining yourself. Any salon where that is not obviously true is the wrong salon.
